RED HEAVIES FEATURE AT STATE 7S TITLES

Following a short and sharp 7s season, the Red Heavies men's and women's teams claimed the bronze and silver medals in their respective competitions at the State 7s Titles on the weekend.

The men's team played consistently throughout the season, led by Head Coach and Manager combination of Harry Curtin and Brynna Walker. The lads lifted at the State Titles (Stannard Shield) on the weekend with recent Australian 7s representative, Connor Clancy showing the way for the young team.

Our women's team came together around 5 weeks ago and were initially a little 'rusty', having not played together previously. However, at the State Titles on the weekend, the team fought strongly right through to their final game of the season against the back-to-back champions in Bond University. In the end, Bond was too strong, so the students walked away with a well deserved silver medal. The girls also picked up a 3rd place in the overall Caslick Cup, played across the last 3 tournaments of the season.

The Club would like to thank all of the players involved in the season, plus all of the support staff including Asako Digi Ono, Flick Goodwin, Cameron Wright, Charlee Todd, Alecsi Charlton, Tom Rossiter, Harry Curtin, Brynna Walker, Soraya Hammond and Lachie Sperling.

THE RED HEAVIES CONGRATULATE ANDREW HAY

Andrew Hay, one of the Club’s committee members who was instrumental in putting together the UQRFC Japan tour in 2019, has recently been awarded a Japanese Foreign Minister's Commendation for the promotion of cultural and economic exchange between Japan and Australia.

In addition to the UQRFC work with Japanese universities, Andrew has been the President of the Australia Japan Society Queensland and headed up the Japanese practice for law firm, Clayton Utz.

The Japanese Foreign Minister’s Commendations are awarded to individuals and groups with outstanding achievements in international fields, in order to acknowledge their contributions to the promotion of friendship between Japan and other countries and areas - in this case Australia. The Commendations also aims to promote the understanding and support of the Japanese public for the activities of the recipients.

In 2024, the Commendations were awarded to 186 individuals and 59 groups around the world.

Congratulations Andrew.
